Engraving, Marie Antoinette

Name/Title

Engraving, Marie Antoinette

Context

French hand-colored engraving by Barthélemy Roger (1770-1841), after Jean J. Monanteuil (1785-1860), and after Alexandre Roslin, called "le Seudois"(1718-1793), ca. 1828. The large formal portrait print of Marie Antoinette depicts the Queen of France (1755-1792) in an elaborate ruffled court dress and she is wearing a so called "fontange", a high headdress popular during the18th centuries France. The background landscape is framed by a massive velvet drape tied back with tassels and two large marble columns. The work recalls the portraits of Elisabeth Vigée-Le Brun, a prominent French artist who was a friend and confidant of Marie Antoinette, and painted about 30 portraits of her between 1778 and 1788.
