Context

In the upstairs hall of the Neill-Cochran House Museum sits an American Victor Victrola from 1920. Victrolas are internal horn phonographs made by the Victor Talking Machine Company during the late 19th century and early 20th century, and Victrolas are unique in that the doors on the front acted as a crude volume control. If the doors were left open, the sound would be loud. By the 1920s, sales in Victrolas declined as the home radio became more popular. This Victrola was gifted to the NCHM by Mrs. Benny Hughes.
