Miniature after Filippo Lippi

Name/Title

Miniature after Filippo Lippi

Context

This miniature on ivory depicts the Virgin Mary and Child with two angels placed in front of an open window that offers a view on an elaborate landscape. The composition is after a famous 15th century painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Filippo Lippi (ca. 1406-1469) and which is now housed in the collection of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. Numerous painted copies in oil, watercolor, as well as print exist after Lippi’s Madonna and Child. This miniature was likely to have served as a devotional image. As a small-scale portable religious image, it could have been carried by its owner to inspire devotion and provide comfort or displayed in the intimacy of the home.
