Miniature after Philips Wouwerman

Name/Title

Miniature after Philips Wouwerman

Context

This miniature on ivory is after a painting of the Dutch artist Philips Wouwerman (1619-1668) depicting Fishermen on a beach (Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden, Germany). Wouwerman was one of the most versatile and prolific artists of the Dutch Golden Age specializing in landscape and battle scenes. Since he made an influential contribution to the canon of seventeenth-century Dutch painting it is not surprising that Wouwerman’s paintings were very popular among collectors all over Europe. As a result, reproductions and copies after his compositions, like this miniature at the Neill-Cochran House Museum, also flourished.
