Miniature on PorcelainContext
This watercolor on porcelaine miniature represents a putto gardening. It is signed by the English potter and designer Joseph Palin Thorley (1892-1987). It is one of a pair of painted ceramics in the Neill-Cochran House Museum's collection. Its counterpart depicts a putto sailing on a raft.
Thorley was born in Staffordshire, the heart of England’s ceramic production area where he started as an apprentice at Wedgwood, one of the most recognizable names in British ceramics. In 1927, he immigrated to the United States and more specifically to East Liverpool in Ohio, America’s counterpart of England’s Staffordshire. Thorley worked for many important manufactories in the United States and quickly earned acclaim. He received an honorary doctorate from West Virginia University.Acquisition
