Miniature PortraitContext
This 19th century portrait miniature depicts the general of the French Revolutionary Wars Jean-Baptiste Kleber (1753-1800). An oil portrait of the military leader painted in 1804 by Jean-Baptiste-Paulin Guérin (1783-1855) served as a model for this miniature (Palace of Versailles, France) .
As for many miniature portraits, the artist remains unidentified. Nevertheless, the inscription “.EA.” atop the man’s left shoulder might reveal the monogram of the miniaturist’s name.
The framing is a circular pressed horn case edged in brass with a brass hanger.Acquisition
