Fan in Shadow Box, Abduction of Theophane

Context

Hanging in the French Parlor of the Neill-Cochran House Museum is a paper fan of European provenance made sometime between 1830-1850. The fan has ivory piqué blades with raised floral motifs, originally gilded but the gold has faded. It sits in a gilt shadowbox frame lined with olive velvet. The paper leaf is decorated with a lithographic print colored with watercolor and oil paint. It depicts the abduction of the beautiful Theophane by the sea god Nepture, who drives a chariot surrounded by his retinue of Nereids, or sea nymphs. The fan was gifted to the NCHM by Mrs. W.
