Tapestry Bag, c. 19th- 20th century 6 ⅝ x 7 in. at fullest Gift of Mary Louise Hopson. 2016.04.04 This tapestry evening bag depicts scenes of courtship and a temple folly surrounded by flowering trees. It features a metal chain and metal clasp with flower motifs on one side and inlaid blue beads on the other. The interior of the bag is peach colored silk with sewn in pockets and compartments for storage. Bags such as this again gained popularity during the 19th century, having first originated in the Middle Ages. They were often presented as tokens of affection or as wedding presents.
