Context

The Christmas tree evolved over centuries into what we recognize today. The first decorated evergreen boughs in the wintertime were part of the Roman celebration of Saturnalia. In many cultures, evergreen branches symbolized life in the darkness, as they managed to stay green throughout the winter. The first Christmas trees were sold in Germany in 1531. At their beginning, Christmas trees were decorated with candles and paper flowers, not too far off from the twinkling lights and ornaments we know today!
