CabinetContext
On either side of the main doorway of the NCHM French Parlor are a pair of two ornate black cabinets with white marble tops. These French-made cabinets are known as Boulle cabinets after famous French cabinet maker André Charles Boulle (1664-1732). Although these cabinets were made around 1860, they draw on the baroque Louis XVI style from the years prior to the French Revolution.
The cabinets are made of ebonized wood, each with a shaped marble top, gilt-bronze ormolu mouldings, and a single central door. Each door front features an oval cartouche with an inlaid brass design, and each has a lock and key.
These gorgeous cabinets were gifted to the Neill-Cochran House Museum in 1957 by Laura Thomson Barrow in honor of her mother, Laura Driscoll Thomson of San Antonio. You can see them, and all of our stately artifacts, Wed-Sun, 11am - 4pm.Acquisition
