Overt-Mantle Mirror

Name/Title

Overt-Mantle Mirror

Context

American, ca. 1840-1860. Early Victorian over-mantel mirror in gold-leaf frame with elaborate carving at top and on both corners of lower edges. Over-mantle mirrors played an important role in American homes before the advent of electricity, because they double the light by reflecting the candles lit on the mantle as well as the light from the chandelier.
