In the 1855 Bedroom of the Neill-Cochran House Museum stands a large armoire made of walnut with veneer trim in the Empire style. The provenance is unknown, but stylistically it appears to be American in origin, likely made between 1820-1850.
The armoire sits on pedimented feet that look like Ionic column capitals. The frame stiles are fronted by scrolling pieces that project out from the front, while the cornice is simple and bold. It has double doors each made of two panels with a horizontal piece. The only fixtures on the exterior are the hinges and two brass locks, one on each door. Inside the left door bay is a hanging space, and inside the right door bay are four shelves and three drawers each with a brass pull.
This armoire was given to the Neill-Cochran House Museum by Ms. Laura Burleson. You can see it, and all of our artifacts Wed-Sun, 11-4pm.Acquisition
