Context

Ruth Levy Guinzburg (1898-1989), was the wife of sculptor, Frederick Guinzburg and was herself an artist. During a visit to Japan, they became enthusiasts of Japanese art and culture, and she designed and installed an extensive Japanese garden next to their home and studio on King Street. She also made brush-and-ink drawings in the sparse, evocative Japanese style, such as this view of the barn roofs at Sutton Farm. During the twentieth century the historic landmark of Sutton Farm proved especially appealing to local artists. Sutton Farm, located on Whippoorwill Road, was the last working farm in New Castle. Its rural setting and cluster of antique barns and other outbuildings became the inspiration for a range of personal artistic interpretations.
