Context

Located at 45 Hunts Place in Chappaqua, New Castle, N.Y., the Chappaqua Inn was a colonial-style building constructed circa 1820s. Situated near the town center, it served as a local landmark during a period of significant growth and change, particularly following the arrival of the railroad in 1846, which shifted the town’s commercial and civic activity closer to the train station. While detailed historical records of the inn’s earliest years are limited, it likely played a role in serving travelers and locals as Chappaqua evolved into a transportation hub. In the 1930s, the building operated as a restaurant and inn under the management of Mrs. Stanton, continuing its tradition as a gathering place in the community. Decades later, during an Eagle Scout project on the site, numerous clay pipes and arrowheads were unearthed near the back porch, offering clues to the area’s deeper historical layers. Though now a private residence, the former inn remains a meaningful part of Chappaqua’s 19th- and 20th-century heritage.
