Description

Black and white postcard of "Hemlock Grange, Chappaqua, NY"

Context

1130 Hardscrabble Road Built on the hillside for winter protection, the old section of the house has a stone foundation reportedly built by Native Americans. The larger center structure, built in 1760, was probably two and one-half stories high. Since houses were accessed according to their height, home owners resorted to building half-stories with the roof slanting to the floor below, deriving the benefit of additional rooms while avoiding higher assessments. Low ceilings, an original fireplace, hearth, and some window glass remain from the earliest days. Mr. Valentine, who lived here in the late Victoria period, added the grape arbor and pool. The graceful building, know also as Hemlock Grove, has at periods plated the roles of farm house, manor house of an extensive estate, nursing home and, allegedly, a Quaker school and an underground station during the Civil War.
