Description

Framed watercolor painting of the Chappaqua Fire Department's, Senter Street Firehouse, by James Renwick Thomson. Commissioned by Westley P. Heilman upon his retirement in 1965. James Renwick Thomson (1891-1968) was a noted architect who designed the Horace Greeley School (now the Robert E. Bell Middle School), the rectory of the Church of St. and St Mary, and the addition to the original Chappaqua Library (now the Community Center), as well as many local homes. He was also a pioneer member of the New Castle Planning Board from its foundation in 1929 until 1948. But he was also a very talented artist, utilizing his training in preparing architectural renderings for clients to create sensitive and atmospheric watercolor landscapes of subjects based upon his many travels and his own community.
