Context

The school is that of District #4, at the southeast corner of King Street and Bedford Road. It was the most populous school in New Castle at the beginning of the 20th century, and became the nucleus of the Chappaqua Central School District. The school building was becoming overcrowded by the time this photo was taken in 1905 or 1906, and plans were probably underway for its nearby replacement, the 4-classroom King Street School, in 1908. The old wooden building was dismantled and literally sold for parts. Some of the remnants were incorporated into the present bicycle shop building across Bedford Road.
