Context

Croton and Catskill Aqueducts in Millwood and New Castle Millwood and the greater New Castle area are traversed by three major aqueducts that played vital roles in supplying water to New York City. The Old Croton Aqueduct, completed in 1842, was the city's first large-scale water system, drawing from the Croton River. It was later supplemented by the New Croton Aqueduct in 1890. Construction of the Catskill Aqueduct, began in 1907, extended the water supply further, bringing water from the Catskill Mountains. In the 1930s, New Castle connected to the Catskill system and later to the New Croton Aqueduct for its local water needs. To protect this critical infrastructure, a specialized Aqueduct Police force was established, tasked with safeguarding the aqueducts and ensuring secure access for maintenance. Today, parts of the Old Croton Aqueduct route through Millwood are preserved as part of the Old Croton Aqueduct State Historic Park, now a popular trail for walking and biking that offers a scenic way to explore the area's rich engineering and environmental history.
