Description

Piper Rock Festival - Here are some scenes from the rock festival which took place in May of 1970 at the Lightner farm just outside of Newton Falls. Over 10,000 came to hear the superaplified rock sounds staged despite a court injuction and inclement weather conditions.Rain Saturday and Sunday created a sea of mud on the 55 acre farm but had no dampening of the spirits effect on the rock fans. No serious incidents were reported and the 10,000 young people in general behaved well. Some skinny dipping was reported in the mahoning River and why anyone would smoke a cigarette so slow that the butt has to be held ginegerly to aviod lip burns you can conclude for yourself. Festival promoters said they regreted the injunction bussiness but that arrangements were far to activated to stop. It was a 'Lark in the mud" and everyone appeared to have a good time, including the many curious adults from here who went to "observe" - Newton Falls Herald May 27th 1970.
