Description

Two page letter with envelope. Letter is believed to have been written by George Washington (G.W.) Allen to his cousin Leonard Miller. The letter was written from Miller's military location in Nashville, Tennessee. G.W. and Leonard were first cousins. Their mothers were sisters with the maiden name Hudson. Letter is dated May 18, 1865. The envelope reads: G.W. Allen/Mrs. Reisingers Grandfather.

Nashville Tenn. May the 18 / 65 Cousin Leonard. I had the Honor of Reseving (??) Yours of the 8 Yesterday and with pleasure I will Now endevor to Write a few lines in return Leonard when I wrote to You the other time I did Not hardly think that at this time we would still be here But we are and by all apearanse we will stay for some time we are a gowing to elraw (??) lumber to day to fix our quarters up. it apears to be the generall Impresion that we will Remane here the grater part of the Summer there is plases that I would rather be than here but I have stood a grate deal sinse I have bin in the Army & I will try to live through this. It is still as I told You before we hav (??) Nothing to do we have Not had Role Call more than once a week No drilling Nay I (??) Guard to do. it is the lonsomest plase. I Most Over (??) sense that is if we stay in Camp all the time. As I have No News to write you I guess I will tell you of a hunt that two of the boys & I have had. We left Camp on the Morning of the 4th (??) and Came in las Eaining (??) in our Journy we wondered off about 30 Miles & got into Very Welthy part of the Country & there has bin No solders there sense/6t although we was a moung (??) Rebells we was treated with Respect & like jentlemen as We was going along the second day just after dinner we seen a very large Brick dwelling that stood some distance from the Road so we concluded that we Wood gow & give them a call we went to the front dore & Rung the Bill. The Lady of the House appeared she invited us in & be seated I told her that we only Called for a drink of watter but she insisted on us to go in so we did it till the water was fetched by a Negrow woman in the first plase You will understang (??) that it was Not the watter that we called for but used it as an Excuse we talked till it was geting Near Nigh before we spake of gowing & they would Not think of letting us gow until after supper & then there was no use to try to get away that Night & in fact we did No want to but Made them think that we did not want to bother them any More than we had all ready done but we concluded we would stay till Morning. the hole famley were very sociable we had the loveleys (??) time that Night that I have ever seene, there was fine (??) young ladies one of them was the teacher that he had Imployed for his aton (??) family & two was there abording & the other was the frlanters (??) daughters there is No use of Me to try to tell You what was said or what was the arguments was on, but in the beginning I seene they was all eager for arguments so I & one of the boys & part of the time some of the girls was on our side. there was Not A thing from the Negrow to the Loil(??) afare but what was talked over by all it lasted till after on aclock & I do beleave if we had not spoke of retiring the thing would cept up till morning but we all part in good maner (??)
