Sunday Aug, 16
1942.
Dear Frank & Alma
Well here it is Sunday and for a change we have nothing to do. Last Sunday we were on duty 24 hours. Am sorry I haven't written sooner but that couldn't be helped. I can understand why the fellows that left before I did didn't write often now.
We had our first and last divisional parade yesterday. Watch for it in the Newsreel. I'm there on the outside file.
Our furloughs have been canceled until further notice. We expect to move out very shortly. Probably to N.C. You've probably read about our being the first airborne division in the U.S. We'll work like the Germans worked on the island of Crete. Fun huh?
I got a raise the first of Aug, I got $66 a month now. Pretty good business, no.
Tell Mrs Anderson I think someone is spoofing her, or she's spoofing herself. Over. Mid said you folks stopped by. Thats the first you folks saw the boys for quite a spell. Tell Frank I said to remember he has but three nephews. And for three like they I would see them more often.
I got a package of cookies from Irma Hurd yesterday. They were swell. I never thanked the Committee for the others but thats one way of getting more. If you don't answer them they'll think they haven't sent you any. ha ha. But nevertheless they are greatly appreciated. Bill & Mary Andrews have sent quite of few things too. Helen sent me a shaving kit for my birthday. I want to thank you folks for your card & money. It was swell.
I was disappointed on that furlough business. I really thot I would make it home that week. But thats the way it goes. If we move to N.C. I'll only be 800 miles from home. Thats 400 mile closer.
Yes I have my stripes, that is two of them the goal now is to get three of them. I've had them since the 1st of Aug.
Frank, how are all the old timers around town. Tell the Chief to write once in a while. I dropped a card to AD but have never heard from him. There was a good egg. I was talking to Walter Bartek and he said there was nobody around the town anymore, that is anyone he knew. He said there was aa lot of young stuff there tho. I'll bet you old bucks are having a time. ha ha.
Everyone here is trying to catch up on their letter writing, or getting ready to go to town to forget it all.
Bill tells me he has his new Alleys ready to go. I'll bet they are swell.
What kind of work are you doing out there now? You ought to start firing again soon.
I bought some new clothes to come home on. They'll probably be worn here first tho.
Well I can't think of anything more to write so will close for this time.
