No. 29 Limited Edition Newton Township was created in 1806 as a small part of three million acres known as Trumbull County, which extended to Lake Erie and the Pennsylvania line. It was purchased by the state of Connecticut to provide land to soldiers who lost their homes during the Revolutionary War. The twenty five square miles, the main portion being Newton Falls, was bought by Judson Canfield of Connecticut and the southeast part was purchased by Cornelius Dubois of New York. The Dubois mansion took 4 years to complete and was the most famous landmark of Newton Falls until it was destroyed by fire in 1904. Today, Newton Falls looks like a typical small, attractive mid-western community, but it does have unique features. Some of the historic sites in the city are its covered bridge and the falls on the west branch of the Mahoning River. Newton Falls derived part of its name from the rapid flow of river water that created the falls and was first known as “The Falls”. The bridge was constructed in 1831 and is the oldest one still in use in Ohio. It was placed on the U.S. Registry of Historic Places in 1974 and received a state historical marker in 1999. The falls was the mid-point of the PA and Ohio Canal (1840-1868) from Beaver, PA to Akron, Ohio and had the only aqueduct on the canal in Ohio over the East Branch of the Mahoning River. In the 1940’s the Ravenna Arsenal was constructed just west of Newton Falls. This had a major impact on the village. A double covered bridge was moved to improve transportation, housing was built for the Arsenal workers and a canteen was built for recreation. The housing remains as private residences today and the USO canteen is now the community center. The local zip code is a unique zip code, all identical digets (sic) “44444” resulting in a moniker of “Zip City”. It is the only all digit zip code in the country.
