Hello Folks,
Well we can now tell you where we are or have you guessed by this time. Gosh Alma you really must have done a lot of reading and figuring out to get a hunch like you had. What did Frank say about my calling him a dear man instead of a dear fellow.
I will tell you what I got from you for Xmas and then you can tell whether or not I got it all. I got the package containing chocolate candy and cigarettes. I got another with a lot of chocolate candy, tea bags, razer blades, socks and a tie. 2 packages in all. Mid sent me a Xmas parcel sometime ago with candy and tobacco. Elva sent me a money order of cash which also was very welcome being as how we're where we can spend some. I had a 2 day pass and visited one of the larger towns. Went to a dance and a show. The people are very friendly. I had a nice time. Furloughs are in the rage again. I'm not so crazy about seeing London. I figure it would be too much hustle and bustle there. I believe if I got a furlough I'll spend in in Belfast or Londonderry.
The country is real pretty. The grass is a deep green and everything looks so clean. Its swell being here after the filth in Italy. The people are rationed in their food but a G.I. can get his stomach full when he's on pass. Potatoes and sausage is the most popular dish it appears. Eggs are not plentiful although sometimes you can get them, French fried potatoes are called chips here as in Canada. The weather is a different story. Its very damp and chilly here. I haven't seen the pavement dry since being here.
I haven't rec'd many Xmas cards. Hebers, Lawrence Thomas! Mildred Eddy, Merle and Tully, Elva Clo, Mid and yours. Did you folks receive the fancy one I sent.
Had a nice Xmas dinner turkey and some of the trimmings. The Mess hall was decorated a little with a Xmas tree on the inside and a large one with lights on the out. They had stripes of colored paper hanging from ropes strung across the ceiling. It helped a lot. Went to a dance in the evening. We are having a new years Eve dance in the Mess Hall. Don't know whether to go or not. Woman make me awful backward anymore. Yes! Yes!
Got a letter from Helen too. She says she's in Washington for the duration. They switched her around on something different and she doesn't like it. A lot of time wasted she says. She sent me a few pictures in uniform. Nice but she sent them all with her hat on. Would have liked one of her without a hat on. Says she feels swell and weighs 129 lbs. She certainly looks good.
Those pictures of mine weren't that bad were they? I think they looked pretty good. I guess I weigh around 180 now. I might have dropped off a little bit, I've got one of those colds again. Poor me Frank, I not only look like you but a person told me that I have your ways. How about that.
Do you see the Andrews' at all? I sent them a Xmas card but haven't heard from them. Is Beverly's husband still in the states or is he overseas now too.
Well hoping you all have had a joyous Xmas. I will close wishing you a very Happy New Year.
Love.
Chuck.
P.S. The boys are shooting crap. Too bad I've quit gambling. Quit drinking, only more so, too, liquor cost about $15 a quart here. Can't send any of that can you?Parts
