123 Averil Rd, Scraptoft Lane, Leicester Eng 21.8.44 My Dear Alma & Frank, You are wondering, as you gaze upon this letter- who it can possible be from - well let me explain myself, its all thru Charlie (Chuck to me) being posted to Scraptoft Camp - I met him after about a month of his being there, we used to meed once a week to start with - Then as time elapsed we got to meeting twice a week & so on, till now we have established a sound friendship, or may-be its more than a mere friendship- we all have imaginative minds (I hope) however I’ve known Chuck quite a while long enough however to form an opinion & to me he’s one of the nicest fellows anyone could hope to meet. I’m going to miss him when he goes - yes I certainly am, I shall never forget when he went before – (for the invasion I mean) I thoroughly got accustomed to the idea that I had said Goodbye to him forever - anyway he got thru it all with flying colours & low & behold after 7 weeks, he was back at camp & we were having a beer together. He comes home with me in the evenings - I do my best to make coffee to his taste tho I must admit its quite a task however he always drinks it & asks for more so it can’t be do bad can it - when we’ve had supper (about 10:30 pm) we sit & talk, theres only my father - & sister at home with me, Chuck loves to talk of his brother (thats you Frank) & and of you Alma, I was only looking at your photo the other night, jolly nice they are too and then there are his 3 nephews, gosh! he’s mighty proud of those little fellows, he’s always ready to tell us about them, he gets a great kick out of them you can bet, I only wish they would give the lads a break & take them home instead of bringing them back here - but I guess its easier said than done, but some of the lads would give anything to see the folks back home again, Chuck is always telling me he’s going to quit this God Damned army - but I just pull his leg and let it pass as a joke, but quite honestly these lads have had enough- what with Italy, Sicily, North Africa & Normandy – who knows where to next time, but I have to stop thinking of that or else I start to sniff – you can’t help being sentimental these days, & if ever a girl cried over anyone more than I did when I said goodbye to Chuck last time – well I wouldn’t want to meet her out – dad came in tonight & said he heard that the boys at the camp were going in a week – it just put me off my supper & I had to write these few lines to you – hope you don’t think I’m being silly & talking a lot of rot, but I find that writing a letter – when your feeling a bit down in the dumps – seems to lift you up in the world. Hope you will write back - & keep on penning a few lines to Charlie! Letters mean an awful lot to the boys – away from home, time flies doesn’t it - & I must fly too – up to bed its 12:15 already so from all of us over here – to the “Ticknors” over there. Love & Best Wishes Keep Smiling (Miss) Jean – Cook XX Miss Jean C. Cook 123 Averil Rd., Scraptoft Lane, Leicester England p.s. hope I can send you a photo soon.
