Hello Folks,
Received your letter and will apologize for not writing sooner but have been so busy that I haven't had the time. We were on the firing range this past week and that takes all the time from daylight until dark even a little before daylight. I've only written Helen once this past week and I got up a little before breakfast to do that. Next week is another busy week with marches and night problemscanning off, and more shooting.
We moved out of out tents and are now in Barracks (hutments) on the same location. I prefer the tents for mine. There were only six men in a tent and the way it is now we have 17 men in a hutment, which is 3 times the size of a tent.
I got the box of cookies from the ladies and they were good. They were slightly crumbled tho but the crumbs were good too.
I didn't know anything about the old home. Making a palace out of it, eh? All it needed was fixing up.
What kind of work in Frank doing. He never writes so he must be busy too. Frank, if and when you have to come to the army be sure and get a good rest before you get in because there's no rest after your in. A big Bomber just went over and I mean a big one.
Yes, Helen was down again over Memorial Day and I could have cried when she went back, as a matter of fact the tears were many. I hope to get a furlough soon, about the last of Aug. It will only be a 10 day one tho. That hurts. 2 days to get home and 2 days back.
I had to go A.W.O.L. to get out while Helen was here. I left on a Friday evening and came back Monday Morning. I cost me a few stripes. I was approved as a Corporal and they took it away from me for that. We had a new Lt. last week and he asked the sgt why I wasn't made a Corporal. So maybe I make it anyway. It means more money.
Yes I still get the Herald but I don't know many names in it anymore. I am well but not to damned happy. I weigh a 174 lbs. as the weather were a little cooler I believe I could put on weight. I'd have to get more sleep then I did this week tho. It's a damp heat here and stays around 98 or 100. I sweat to beat hell. We're carrying full field packs now too. Ah. What a life.
Did you heat the conversation between the good & bad girl? The good girl said, "Its hard to be good." The bad girl says "Its got to be hard to be good." That one tickled me.
I dropped everything last nite and went into Alexandria. Nothing there but soldiers. I had bacon and eggs and cups of coffee. We walked around a while and came back to camp. Stewart the fellows was with is from Ind. and is a Mason.
I got a letter from Montgomery from New Orleans. 200 mile south, and also one from Serotko. Great Lakes Training Station. Well its chow time So will close for this time
Write and to everyone Hello.
