Standing rigging triple dead eye. Wooden block with 3 ports to guide lines (ropes for sails). Looks like a wooden disc with three large holes thru. (Holes resemble the eyes and nose of a human skull). The disc has metal banding and shaft attached. Triple dead eyes were used in pairs with a line called a lanyard which ran back and forth between them thru the holes and functioned like a block and tackle. The function of standing rigging dead eyes was to support a mast or bowsprit as reinforcement against wind loads from the sails. Running rigging controlled the sails. From the shipwreck of the APA cannery sailing ship bark which sank in 1908, known as the Star of Bengal. Vessel. Rusty and fragile. Needs Conservation.
