Framed aerial photograph taken in 1979 of the Castle Island Mine operated by the Alaska Barite Company. This photo hung at Headquarters, U.S. Geological Survey, Washington D.C. Barite was used in oil well drilling. Background information received from donor in file. David Carnes was mine engineer of the Alaska Barite Company 1970-1974. Over 600,000 tons of barite were mined from the deposit between 1964 and 1980.
