Chilkat robe, Chief Shakes killer whale flotilla robe, a specialty production by Chilkat Tlingit women. Fabric was created by means of twined weaving in handspun mountain goat wool & yellow cedar bark. 12 stylized side-view killer whales arranged against a white design field in three rows, with lower fringe in alternating light green and natural color stripes. Repatriated from the Denver Museum of Nature and Science to the Naanya.aayi clan. Was made for Chief Shakes VI in approx. 1890. Considered a valuable at.oow, it travels with WRG Naanya.aayi clan leaders to important ceremonies and resides other wise in the care of Wrangell Museum.
