Description

Face of a woman, fragment removed from the Raven and Sun totem pole of Chief Shakes at Wrangell. She wears a labret in the lower lip, and probably represents the daughter of Raven-at-the Head-of-Nass who owned the light which Raven stole and threw into the sky. The pole was erected in 1896 and was knocked down by a severe windstorm in November 1978. The pole was carved by Wrangell master carver William Ukas. It retains much of the original paint, and is considered very fragile. It is a section of the totem pole exterior rind, the center being lost to decay. It is of a curved shape, about 3 inches thick, with multiple vertical cracks. Background information and a lost section of the left side was provided by carver Steve Brown. See file. Fragile condition. Keep with internal foam support. Also called the Raven Pole.
