Chief Kow ish te - lying in state May 6, 1878
Chief shakes lying-in-state 1878. This no doubt was Chief Shakes V. He was the last of the Chief Shakes who held on tightly to the old ways. He refused to be converted to Christianity as he felt that if the missionary stories were true, many of his people were already in hell and his wish was to take care of his people. If he went to his grave as a sinner by not converting to Christianity then he knew he would be with his people forever. A good chief did not desert his people!
