Bear up the Mountain and Killer Whale totems
Photo of Chief Shakes' house in 1915. Note the marble monument in front of the two totems. Chief Shakes VI son was murdered in the early 1900s and the monument was erected in his memory. War was not declared as the Chief wanted to act as a Christian and show that he was civilized. The monument is still located on the island minus the bird-like carving on the top.
