Tlingit Shaman's robe. Made of leather, probably deer skin. Clan affiliation and crest imagery unknown. Collected from a shaman's grave by Lt. Emmons in the Stikine River area. Repatriated to T&H by NMAI on 2007. One side is decorated with painted formline Wolf or Bear head which encloses 6 humanoid spirit figures. At each side of this central image are large simular looking humanoid or super natural figures. Near the bottom edge are linked half ovoid shapes in red pigment. Cape or robe was held in place by leather ties at the neck.
Not appropriate display item. Sensitive. Harold Jacobs, T&H Cultural Resource Specialist advises Shaman artifacts should be handled only by museum staff or non-Tlingit members. He noted that from long ago Tlingits knew that it was forbidden to handle the things of a Shaman.
