Description

Tlingit Shaman's staff or ceremonial object. It is a short staff like object held in the hand. It is made of wood, features carved figures painted with green, black, and red pigment. A totemic humanoid figure wearing wolf or bear head at one end, and super natural humanoid face below handle area. Collected from a shaman's grave by Lt. Emmons in the Stikine River area. Repatriated to T&H by NMAI on 2007. Not appropriate display item. Sensitive. Harold Jacobs, T&H Cultural Resource Specialist advises Shaman artifacts should be handled only by museum staff or non-Tlingit members. He noted that from long ago Tlingits knew that it was forbidden to handle the things of a Shaman.
