On our trip to the Channel Island of Guernsey to visit a friend, we reached the shoreline of St. Malo in France to board a ferry to the island. To my amazement, the tide was so far away that boats teetered on their keels on the sandy bottom of the channel. We were told that the tide varies by thirty feet. The boats looked so vulnerable and helpless. The scene immediately struck me as a metaphor for all the issues that face us today they in most cases we cannot control.Dimensions
