Context

"This is a Wallowa Waterhole Series from the late 1970's or early 1980s. I was reading about Chief Joseph and how his tribe was so happy there but the cavalry was going to make them leave. He moved his tribe up into Canada and circled back to the Wallowa valley. Eventually of course the cavalry caught up with him. Later US Military studied his maneuvers and how clever they were. He is still admired today by both Native Americans and white Americans who study American history. This pastel has bird tracks, tipi's, figures, a horse, water holes, fields of fireweed. Because I am part of the Plateau tribes, we have a lot of pictographs, petroglyphs and rock wall paintings in that are and I collect books on them and study them and have included them in my art."
