Two page essay discussing the process of feldspar mining in the Wahnapitei area and the involvement of the railway industry in the mining industry.Context
Mining for feldspar in the Wahnapitei area began in the 1920s. Feldspar is a combination of silica and aluminum, and in the 1920s it was used to make porcelain, refractories, and granular topping for shingles and roofing. The market for this was mostly in the US.
The development of the mining industry for feldspar began in 1922 in Parry Sound, deposits were late found in Wahnapitei. In October of 1922, the McPhee operation began, founded by the four McPhee brothers, originally from Markstay and Duncan MicKinnon of Sudbury. They soon built a camp just south of Wahnapitei and sent the first two cars of feldspar from Northern Ontario. The next year, 58 cars of feldspar were shipped as the operation grew. It was taken by a narrow gauge railway to a siding on the Canadian Pacific Railway in Wahnapitei.
The operation lasted until 1925.Collection
