Context

The canal was created from the of Prime Minister Sir John A. MacDonald on matters of economic and nationalistic arguments made by entrepreneurs looking to use Lake Superiour for both its natural resources as well as a route for the shipment of goods. Specifically, to create a route to ship grain from the West. The canal was opened in 1895, and named the Canadian Canal. It allowed for both freight and passenger ships to travel on Lake Superior. The book is broken down into three parts to discuss the history and development of the canal.
