Doctor William Howey took up work as a physician working for the Canadian Pacific Railway in Northeastern Ontario. The book is a first hand account written by Florence Howey about their experience moving from Hamilton Ontario to Mattawa Ontario in December of 1882. During their time living there they were responsible for caring for the Canadian Pacific Railway's workers. The book also discusses the development of Sudbury Ontario between 1883 and 1886.Collection

Written by Florence Howey before her death in 1936, it was printed posthumously in 1938 as "Pioneering the C. P. R.", then published as "Sudbury Minus One" in 1968 by the students of Sheridan Technical School. In 2002 it was reprinted by the Sudbury Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society.
