Description

Canadian National branded cheque and stub paid to the Bank of Toronto, for 39 FT Scutchings, amounting to $0.11. The cheque was written for November 16th, 1953 and attached to the cheque was the stub which included deductions and showed the total earned after such. The cheque and stub include the areas to record: working number, pay to the order of, period cheque number, audit, period, exactly, dollars, cents, amount earned, deduction code: class and vendor, misc. deductions, CR, income tax, Pension: CL, U. I. C., amount due, employee number, period cheque number, period ending Distinguishing Features: Tan coloured paper with black, red, purple, and blue lettering

Context

Original document, original copy of the cheque, which was worth $0.11, written on November 16th, 1953. Canadian National was created following the end of the First World War, by combining five lines which were financially troubled. It soon became the largest railway in the country. Canadian National Railways was founded in 1919 as a combination of several railways that had become bankrupt and were being ran by the Canadian Government Railways, its primary service was freight but also operated passenger service until 1978 until it was absorbed by VIA rail. The Canadian National Railways was created by the Government of Canada as a means to fund the failing railway corporations including: Intercolonial Railway of Canada, National Transcontinental Railway, Prince Edward Island Railway, and Hudson's Bay Railway.
