Context

In 1902 a board of commisioners was tasked to build a railway line from North Bay to Lake Temiskaming, to be known as the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway. The line was completed by December 31st, 1904. The reason for the creation of this line was the recognition of the area's rich lumber, vast land, and possible mineral deposits. In 1946 the name was changed to Ontario Northland because there was another company in Texas by the name of Texas and New Orleans with the same initials and it was causing confusion. The railway line runs from North Bay, northward through Cobalt, New Liskeard, Cochrane, and on to its northern terminus at Moosonee on the Moose River, about 12 miles (19 km) south of the shore of James Bay. There is one major branchline running eastward from Swastika through Kirkland Lake and over the Quebec border to end at Rouyn-Noranda. The railway's branch from Swastika to Rouyn-Noranda, including 40 kilometres of track in Quebec, is operated by a subsidiary, the Nipissing Central Railway.
