Canadian National postcard showing Steam Engine #6234 leaving Hamilton Ontario, in 1958. The front image shows the right side of the locomotive, meaning the engine, and tender are visible. There are also two workers standing next to the engine. The caption on the reverse side reads: "Bayview, Ontario - August 29, 1958 Canadian National Railways Train 83, enroute from Toronto to Windsor, starts up the grade towards Dundas after a stop at Hamilton. Steam locomotive 6234 was built in 1943 by Montreal Locomotive Works. Bayview, Ontario - Le 27 Aout, 1958 Le train numero 83 du chemin de fer Canadien Nationale, en route de Toronto a Windsor, monte la pente vers Dundas apres un arret a Hamilton. Canadian National was created following the end of the First World War, by combining five lines which were financially troubled. It soon became the largest railway in the country. Canadian National Railways was founded in 1919 as a combination of several railways that had become bankrupt and were being ran by the Canadian Government Railways, its primary service was freight but also operated passenger service until 1978 until it was absorbed by VIA rail. The Canadian National Railways was created by the Government of Canada as a means to fund the failing railway corporations including: Intercolonial Railway of Canada, National Transcontinental Railway, Prince Edward Island Railway, and Hudson's Bay Railway.Collection
