Description
CPR “Coal Ports” over the years
General data on coal from Lionel Moorey, CPR Superintendent (retired) in Sudbury
Algoma Mills:
• originally established to supply regional rail and steamship needs, particularly in the early days when it was visualized as the “supply port” for materials being forwarded to construction sites on Lake Superior’s north shore
• probably began phasing out beginning 1913 when Britt (originally called Dunlop) opened as a coal port; this operation continued until 1957 and then switched to being an oil port
Heron Bay:
• located on the north shore of Lake Superior, from ± 1903, this had been an early coal port
Jackfish:
• also located on the north shore of Lake Superior; apparently established as a coal port before 1920Other Names and Numbers
