Scope and Content

Book containing the journal entries and artwork of Frank E. Schoonover during his time exploring various areas throughout Northern Ontario.

Context

Frank E. Schoonover was born in 1877 and at the age of 20 he was a star pupil at the Drexel Institute in Philadelphia. During the 20th century, all of the best illustrated magazines were commissioning Schoonover's work. He specialized in paintings suitable for colour plates. Schoonover was also the originally illustrator for Jack London's "White Fang" and "Hopalong Cassidy". He also wrote and lectured on the Canadian North. The journal entries are in two parts: Part 1. From the Day Book of the Winter Expedition of 1903-1904. In this part, Schoonover includes photographs, sketches, and paintings from this expedition. Mostly the art work and content of the entries discuss his Indigenous guides and interactions with Indigenous people. He also discusses trading posts and the landscape. Part 2. From the Day Book of the Summer Expedition of 1911. In this part, Schoonover includes photographs, sketches, and paintings from his second expedition. The subject matter is again mostly focused on the landscape and Indigenous peoples. Part 3. The Canadian Stories. The remainder of the book features stories from Schribner's Magazine, written by Schoonover and featuring his art. They are as follows: 1. The Edge of the Wilderness 2. Breaking Trail 3. The Fur Harvesters 4. Bringing the Outdoors In 5. The Snow Baby Part 4. Canadian Illustrations This part features paintings, sketches, photographs, and lantern slides.
