The book follows the experiences of J. H. Stovel, who graduated in 1903 from the Mining Department of McGill University. Upon graduation, Stovel worked for a coal mine in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
During the course of the book he discusses the innovations and changes he saw in the mine as well as the dangers of the mining trade as well as his experience in the mining field at different types of mines.
