Description mounted below image: Several houses were built from lumber scrounged from abandoned box cars or timbers cut from surrounding land. One fellow, known as "old Joe", bored an enormous hole into the side of the hill and boarded up the front. He kept warm with a wood stove inside his earth house. (Myma Beck in photo)
