Book describing the experience of Stanley G. Grizzle an African Canadian sleeping car porter for the Canadian Pacific Railway.Context
The book contains the personal reminiscences of Stanley G. Grizzle. Grizzle worked for 20 years as a sleeping car porter for the Canadian Pacific Railway. The story discusses the experiences of African Canadian porters and their mistreatment, long hours, and low wages. The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters was created in order to fight the injustices. Grizzle later became a Judge in the Court of Canadian Citizenship, he was the first African Canadian Judge in that court.
The title comes from the tradition of uncaring and demeaning passengers referring to all porters as "George" which showcased how little people cared about or for porters.Collection
