A series of letters between Moose Mountain Ltd., 17 Battery Place, New York, and the company stake holders, dating to December 1917. The letters regard the delay of the payment of "Five percent. Ten Year Gold Convertable Notes" for one year. The letters are folded into thirds and stored in a paper envelop, labeled "Letters In Re. Moose Mountain Bond Ltd." The last letter (2019.003.004d) is handwritten on linen paper. Half of the front side of the sheet is blank, apart from a watermark set into the paper which must be held up to the light to be read. The watermark reads "Crane's Distaff Linen 1910", and there is an image of a spinning wheel beside the text.Context
The Moose Mountain Mine, located in the township of Sellwood, Ontario operated from 1907 to 1920. The property was leased from the Moose Mountain Limited from Lowphos Ore, a subsidiary of the National Steel Corporation. It was an iron mine.
Sellwood became a ghost town shortly after the mine closed. In 1959, the National Steel Company began operating in the area and removed the remains of the previous townsite due to open pit mining. The new mine closed in 1978.Collection
