Scope and Content

Binder containing a research paper as well as transcriptions of original documents regarding Bruce Mines, Ontario.

Context

The binder begins with a research paper: The first section discusses the founding and discovery of Bruce Mines, Ontario and the main resources and industrial development that originally brought settlers into the area. Bruce Mines was home to Canada's first metal mine, it had a copper deposit. In 1846 James Cuthbertson and surveyors staked a copper mining location on the north side of Lake Huron, north of St. Joseph's Channel, west of the Tessalon River (today Bruce Mines). It was named the Cuthbertson Location, but later in the year it was sold to the Montreal Mining Company for $40,000. The name was changed to Bruce Mines, named after Governor-General James Bruce, the Earl of Elgin. The company was sold to the West Canada Mining Company in 1864. The mine continued to operate on and off, also changing ownership (1905: Copper Mining and Smelting Company of Ontario, 1906: The Copper Mining and Smelting Co.) until 1921. The next section discusses The Rock Lake Mining Company: The Rock Lake Mining Company was founded in 1899 in the north half of lot 2 and 3 and concession 6 in Plummer and the south half of lots 2 and 6 as well of all of lots 3, 4, and 5 in Coffin Township (District of Algoma). The areas had large showings of ore in the form of quartz-carbonate-chalcopyrite. The ore in question was copper, however the ore was of low purity. This mine continued to operate until 1913.
