Context

The book was distributed to trainees who were taking a course on truck and traction motors. It was divided into five modules: introduction, trucks, wheels, traction motors, references. Each module included the following: 1. Introduction: - Course Goal - Course Objective 2. Locomotive Trucks: - Module Objectives - Introduction: two-axle truck, three-axle truck - Types of Trucks: overview, GP Truck (with single brake shoe) and swing hanger truck (clasp brake), GP (General Purpose) truck, swing hanger truck, flexicoil switcher trucks, six wheel trucks (Special Duty and High Traction) three axle, HTC - R Truck (dynamics, components, and function), GE three-axle high-adhesion truck (components and features) 3. Wheels: - Module Objectives - Introduction: wheel types in service, gauges - Measurement of Wheels: limits (permissible variation in wheel diameter), flanges, thin flange, vertical flange, high flange, thin rim (wheel tread thickness), hollow tread wheel, slid flat, shelled tread - Inspection of Wheels: cracked broken shattered rim or flange, spread rim, thermal cracks, built-up tread, grooved tread, wheel plate, overheated wheel 4. Traction Motors: - Module Objectives - Introduction - Components: armature, traction motor frame (motor support bearing, inspection of traction motor support bearings), gearing, gear ratio, cooling - Procedures: a) Traction Motor Application: - Table 1: Application of GM Traction Motors - Table 2: Application of GE 725 Traction Motors and Hitachi HS-24150 Traction Motors b) Traction Motor Changeout: - Steps involved in Traction Motor Removal - General - Steps involved in Traction Motor Application - General - Steps involved in Traction Motor Removal on GM Radical Adhesion Truck - Steps involved in Traction Motor Removal - GE High Adhesion Truck - Torque Values - Steps involved in Stripping Traction Motors - Support Bearing Failure Teardown Reports Canadian National was created following the end of the First World War, by combining five lines which were financially troubled. It soon became the largest railway in the country. Canadian National Railways was founded in 1919 as a combination of several railways that had become bankrupt and were being ran by the Canadian Government Railways, its primary service was freight but also operated passenger service until 1978 until it was absorbed by VIA rail. The Canadian National Railways was created by the Government of Canada as a means to fund the failing railway corporations including: Intercolonial Railway of Canada, National Transcontinental Railway, Prince Edward Island Railway, and Hudson's Bay Railway.
