Journal #15 published by the Postal History Society of Canada, featuring a story on the 25th anniversary of the Lively, Ontario post office.Context
The post office in Lively, Ontario opened on July 3rd, 1951. The request for the creation of this post office came from the International Nickel Company of Canada (INCO) as a result of the company building over 125 homes for its workers near the Creighton Mine, the community was to be named Lively after Charles Lively. The company's assistant to the vice president, I. J. Simcox wrote to the Post Office Inspector in North Bay, Ontario on November 17th, 1950 to make the request.
Charles Lively originally from Rodwin Hants County, Nova Scotia (nee 1887) began his mining career in a mine near his home town. In 1905 he came to Cobalt, Ontario where he assisted in opening a silver mine. In 1913 he came to Sudbury, Ontario and was working for INCO by 1915. By 1937 he became Assistant Superintendent of the Creighton Mine, later in 1940 he was promoted to Superintendent of the Garson Mine, and by 1942 he was also the Superintendent of the Levac Mine. In 1951 he retired from INCO and passed away in 1954.
During his time working for INCO, Lively became well known for improving the mining industry. One of the biggest improvements he made was riding the task of hand mucking. This was done by making the first cut in the centre of the stope, thus allowing gravity to create the flow of muck into the box holes.Collection
